What is Hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus (hi'dro-sef'a-lus), also known as "water on the brain", is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain (called ventricles). A lack of absorption, blockage of flow, or overproduction of the cerebral spinal fluid can cause this. An accumulation of CSF places pressure on the brain by, in many cases, by pushing the brain against the skull. Currently the most common treatment for Hydrocephalus is brain surgery to insert a mechanical drain (a Shunt) into the ventricles and drain the CSF away from the brain.

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Hydrocephalus. This is why we need to up our awareness game, big time!

September is National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month!

Congressman Leonard Lance from NJ issued the following statement in support of September as National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month.

Today we recognize September as National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month.
For far too long, little attention has been paid to hydrocephalus."

This condition can occur at any age and affects an estimated one million Americans. In fact, one out of every 500 babies in the United States is born with hydrocephalus, making the condition the leading cause of brain surgery in children. Additionally, an increasing number of our veterans are developing post-traumatic hydrocephalus as a result of brain injuries suffered on the battlefield. Currently, there is no single known cause of hydrocephalus or ways to prevent or cure the condition.

As part of our Awareness efforts, I was invited in September 2014 to give a speech to members of Congress. This was a wonderful opportunity and I took full advantage of it! I was one of 4 speakers and the only teen invited to tell my story. I was able to educate members of congress about Hydrocephalus and share my story. If you are interested in reading my speech, you can download it by clicking here or just drop me an e-mail and I will be happy to share it with you. My speech was also published in the "On My Mind 2015" book published by the Northeast Westchester Rotary Foundation (www.newrotaryclub.org).

On a personal note, Why Hydrocephalus Awareness
is important to me...

Hydrocephalus Awareness is very important to me because I know what it's like to live with this medical condition. What it's like to spend your birthday and other holidays in a hospital bed pleading the neurosurgeon to hold off on surgery for one day so you can enjoy that special day. Even when you miss parties and other events because of horrible headaches that come with having hydrocephalus. Or having people look at you weird when you come back to school for the first time after brain surgery and part of your head is shaved and people think you are "different" or "odd." My goal is to help people, their families and their friends facing these challenges and let them know that they are NOT alone!

To date, with your help, we have raised over $25,000 for the Hydrocephalus Community! I could not be more proud of our community for all their efforts and support!

I am excited to share with you that I have recently committed to attend Sacred Heart University as part of the Class of 2020! Because of all our efforts, I was awarded a generous Community Service Scholarship to help support my university studies! I can't even tell you have excited I am and how much I am looking forward to introducing Sacred Heart to Carli's Angels!!!

With your continued help and support, I know we can make a positive difference in the lives of Hydrocephalus patients and their families. Thank you for all your love and support,
Carli
